Antigua Cont. - Just me rambling
Nov 19, 1999

These older journal entries were hastily typed in at local cybercafes where I was paying by the minute.  Please excuse grammar mistakes or typos.

Antigua Cont.
Another lazy day.  I was supposed to go shopping, instead I took a 3 hour siesta mid-day.  I'm finally catching up on all the sleep I missed while on the Larium

The floppy woven hat

In the last week the hat has served as a sun shade to prevent sunburn, a mask to cover my eyes for sleeping on a bus, a towel to wipe away a bit of sweat and a gas mask to prevent breathing the volcano's sulphuric smoke.  It weighs almost nothing, it folds down to nothing...  It's starting to smell a bit funny, but it's a damn good hat!

Apples

I bought some fruit and a sandwich for the hike up the volcano.  The hike ended in a small village.  I had finished the sandwich and the bananas, but I still had the bag of miniature apples that I bought 1 quetzales (approx.  14 cents).  I passed it out to the kids of the village who were begging for bread.  Never before have I brought so much happiness for pennies.

Baudelaire

Who is Baudelaire?  Twice in one day I found references to Baudelaire.  Seeing the name twice in one day and having _no_ idea who this person is me feel like there is a real hole in my education.  One references was in some bad literature that I had picked up in a book exchange in Flores, the other in my guidebook where he is attributed with the quote "One should always be drunk?" A quick yahoo search tells me that he is a poet.  Does anyone, more literate than I, want to send me a quick summary?

Gifts

Who wants one?  Buying gifts is such a pain.  Is it just me, or are all of my friends particularly hard to buy gifts for.  Jenn wants a rock, Shannon a bug.  Anyone have requests?
