Still in Panajachel.
Keyboard much better today.
I didn't get up early enough to take the bus this morning. I barely got up in the morning. I blame it on the rain. It rained particularly hard for a few hours last night. Not only couldn't I run my necessary errands, but in the rain there was little to do but drink. After the first liter of beer, I joined a crowd of Englishmen and women for dinner. Drinks over dinner became, drinks over dancing. Although Panajachel is not particularly happening on a Wednesday night. For quite a while it was just me and the two English women dancing.
The bar was classic. It must have been on the verge of going out of business because it was out of stock of just about everything. Rum and cokes were ordered, the young bartender ducks from behind the bar, rushes across the street to the liquor store and comes back with a bottle of coke. I asked if they had pineapple juice for a Rum and Pineapple. When he replied "No" I sent him across the street to get me some.
Drinks turned into more drinks. Some pool was played and when the bar shut down I followed two Swedish women to an after hours bar. The crowd consisted of a dj/bartender, 3 Guatemalan men, myself, and the two women. More dancing was done, and I even got official hip-shaking lessons. According to my drunk instructor, as you travel further south the more hip-shaking you need to do. Norte-Americanos dance with their hands. Centro-Americanos dance much more in the hips. Yeah.... I can't wait for Rio.
Just sent mail to the travel agency requesting a room one block from the Copacabana beach. It's $1100, and it's not even a very nice hotel, but I suppose it's worth the money to spend New Years surrounded with 16 million hip-shaking Brazilians.
Maybe tomorrow I'll manage to get up early enough to catch a bus towards El Salvador. However... as I was typing the Swedish women came by and said hi. I'm joining them for pool and drinks a bit later.
